The number of people who are riding public transportation is at an all time high as postings on this blog and in Sunday's Star Tribune have reported.
But besides saving time behind the wheel and stress, the American Public Transportation Association is out with its March Transit Savings Report, which shows that that those who ride the bus, light-rail or commuter trains or other forms of mass transit will save an average of $842 this month and up to $10,100 annually.
The report, which is issued monthly to show how one person in a two-person household can save money by taking public transportation and living with one less car, based its findings on using the national average price of a gallon of gas of $3.53 on March 19 as listed by AAA and the national unreserved monthly parking rate.
Minneapolis came in at No. 10 on the list of 20 metro areas with the highest public transit ridership. Transit riders here save an average of $890 per month and $10,684 annually. Here is the complete list and the amount APTA calculated transit riders would save.
