Twin Cities north metro town briefs: Lyric Arts Cabaret set for May 9-10

The Lyric Arts Main Street Stage will hold its annual Cabaret Fundraiser shows this Friday and Saturday, at the theater's home at 420 E. Main St., Anoka. The show will feature songs and roles from Broadway musicals.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. both days, with a silent auction, games and other activities preceding the 7:30 p.m. show.

The Ghosts of Anoka walking tours begin a new season this week, with outings on Thursday, May 8, and Saturday, May 10. The tours, presented by the Anoka County Historical Society, blend "history and mystery."

They start at 7:30 p.m. at the Anoka History Center and last about an hour and a half. Advance reservations are required. Tickets are $7.50 for adults ($5 for Historical Society members) and $5 for youth. Call 763-421-0600 or go to www.anokacountyhistory.org

The great room at the Isanti County Historical Society will be transformed into "Sweet Sue's Music Hall" for a May 17 Armed Forces Day concert. Angie Senger, Joe Chock and Doyle Peck will perform at the event, set for 6 p.m. at the ICHS Heritage Center, 33525 Flanders St. NE, Cambridge.

Tickets are $12 and can be bought online at www.ichs.ws or at the Heritage Center, which is open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday. Tickets can also be purchased at the door, if available.

Coon Rapids is recruiting candidates to be paid-on-call firefighters.

No training or experience is required. The city will provide training to candidates who are hired, through the Anoka County Fire Training Academy. Applications are due by 4:30 p.m. on May 23.

Interested individuals can also attend an informational session from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on May 15 at Coon Rapids Fire Station 1, 1460 Egret Blvd.

Candidates must meet response time requirements, pass a written exam, meet physical agility standards and sit for an interview with the Civil Service Commission.

Guardian Angels of Elk River, an assisted-living and senior care community, will present its second annual style show on Saturday, May 17, at Guardian Oaks Dining Room, 350 Evans Av. NW, Elk River.

Doors will open at 8 a.m. and the show will start at 9 a.m. In addition to the style show, there will be a brunch, silent auction, plant and bread sale, and more.

Susie Jones of WCCO Radio will be the special guest emcee.

Boy Scout Troop No. 211 will partner with Tech Dump, an electronics recycling nonprofit, later this month to collect unwanted electronics as a fundraiser.

Items such as computers, cellphones, electrical cords, internal or external drives, other electronic accessories, TVs and monitors will be accepted. (There is a $15-45 fee for tube TVs and monitors — not flat panels).

Tech Dump will destroy all information and data on the electronics at its facility in Golden Valley.

Living Waters Lutheran Church in Lino Lakes is presenting a lecture in art series about the intersections of beliefs in the Bible and the Qur'an. The final two sessions will be held between services on Sunday, May 11, and Sunday, May 18, starting at about 9:45 a.m.

The series, called "The Three Faces of Mary," centers on three biblical figures: Miriam, sister of Moses; Mary, mother of Jesus; and Mary Magdalene. At the center of each presentation will be a display of four 11-foot-by-16-foot tapestries, hand-painted by Hend Al-Monsour, an Arab artist who depicts the figures surrounded by four languages: Hebrew, Arabic, Greek and Latin.

A University of Minnesota prostate cancer support group will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at Hope Lodge, 2500 University Av. SE, Minneapolis. Dr. Christopher Weight, a urologist from the university, will speak to the group, and a question-and-answer segment will follow.

The Treble Tones Women's Chorus will give two performances on Saturday, May 17, at Holy Nativity Lutheran Church, 3900 Winnetka Av. N., New Hope. The Treble Tones have about 40 members and generally sing two- and three-part arrangements of popular songs. The performances are set for 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. that day. Tickets are $10 for people over age 12 and $5 for kids 5-12. They can be bought at the door as well as from Treble Tones members or by calling 763-493-8497.

Melissa Jackson, principal at Bethune Community School in Minneapolis, has been named the new principal of Forest Elementary School in Crystal. She will begin on July 1.

Before her time at Bethune Community, Jackson was assistant principal at Lucy Laney Community School in Minneapolis for two years.
