Twin Cities north metro town briefs: Freestyle ski race on Sunday, March 2

Sunday is the day for the Freestyle Cross Country Ski Race at Green Haven Golf Course. Two races will take place: a 1-kilometer for ages 12 and under and a 5K for those 13 and older. The 5K will have three age groups: 13-18, 19-34 and 34 and above.

Registration fees are $5 for skiers 12 and under and $10 for those 13 and up. Proceeds will go to Anoka High School's Nordic Ski Team.

The golf course is at 2800 Greenhaven Rd., Anoka.

Stories of Minnesota women during the Civil War will be the subject of an Anoka County Historical Society program March 6, at the Chomonix Golf Course clubhouse in Lino Lakes. The 7 p.m. event is part of the Historical Society's Civil War series.

A community meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 26 on the proposed Bottineau light rail line that would run from Minneapolis through Robbinsdale to Brooklyn Park. The meeting at the Roasted Pear, 9690 Colorado Lane, Brooklyn Park, will update residents and seek their input. Hennepin County Senior Engineer Brent Rusco, the Bottineau study manager, will discuss the project planning process, timeline, funding, route and station locations.

Before the meeting, snacks will be served at 6:30 p.m.

Teens have until Friday to apply to take part in Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn Center's Youth in City Government Days next month.

The events are open to students in grades 10-12. Participants will tour fire departments and police departments, be matched with a department head or elected city official, and take an active role in a City Council meeting.

A youth in government day will be held in each city: Brooklyn Park's will be on March 17 and Brooklyn Center's on March 24. Participants must live in Brooklyn Park or Brooklyn Center and will be involved in the event in their city. Food and transportation are provided.

New Hope will offer an adult CPR/AED class from 9 a.m. to noon and a pediatric CPR/AED class from 1 to 4 p.m. March 8 at City Hall.

The morning class will teach participants how to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies for people 12 years of age and older. Participants also will learn how to use an AED (automated external defibrillator) device.

The pediatric class will teach skills for helping infants and children up to 12 years of age. The classes will be taught by a Red Cross-certified instructor.

Those taking part must be at least 16 years old. Deadline to register is Feb. 28; the fee is $60 for New Hope residents and $67 for nonresidents.

At 6 p.m. Saturday, Holy Nativity will host the stars of Midwest Wrestling Entertainment. "This annual event is very unique for us," said the Rev. Jason Wahlstrom. "When you think 'church,' you often don't think 'pro wrestling.' It allows us to offer entertainment, instead of selling something or asking for another donation."

Admission is $12 ($35 for a family of four or more); a $2 discount will be given with a canned-food donation to PRISM. Food and drink concessions will be available.

A prostate cancer support group will meet at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 26 at North Memorial Medical Center, 3300 Oakdale Av. N., Robbinsdale. A story on Page AA1 of the Feb. 19 North Extra reported that the Blaine City Council unanimously approved preliminary plans for a new Wal-Mart on Ball Road. To clarify, the council voted 7-0 to approve a preliminary plat request to subdivide property along Ball Road for the proposed store. In a second vote of 5-2, the council approved a conditional use permit request for a 24-hour Wal-Mart. Members Wes Hovland and Dick Swanson voted against that request after their motion to limit store hours was defeated.
