The just-published lineup for the 2011 Twin Cities Film Fest may not include something for every taste, but it's sure close. For the second year, the fledgling movie series boasts a thoroughly eclectic array of studio films, world cinema, indies, docs, women's works, Minnesota-made entries and shorts.
If you can't find your cup of tea here, you like a very exotic brew indeed.
Studio entries include two strong features, with stars in attendance. First up is the Joseph Gordon-Levitt/Seth Rogen cancer dramedy "50/50." Costar Anna Kendrick ("Twilight," "Up in the Air") will conduct a Q&A following the film. The closing night film is the Sundance Grand Jury Prize Winner "Like Crazy," a poignant love triangle starring Anton ("Fright Night") Yelchin, Jennifer ("Hunger Games") Lawrence and Felicity Jones. Yelchin will attend the screening.
Also in the studio line-up but as yet unseen: Gerard Butler's well regarded Sudan adventure "Machine Gun Preacher" and the raucous redneck horror satire "Tucker and Dale Meet Evil." Nostalgically enough, there's also an encore bigscreen presentation of Joel and Ethan Coen's "Fargo."
The program offers a strong focus on documentaries. The opening night selection is "The Bully Project," which charts a year in the lives of five victimized schoolkids and their families. Later there's the meditative "Yoga Is," "Revenge of the Electric Car" concerning the new effort to produce emission-free autos, "Thunder Soul," the story of a storied Houston high school funk band, and "Undefeated," about an inner-city Memphis football team.
Other sidebars include a sampling of Indian films, home-brewed Minnesote indie features and docs, as well as shorts from the Women's Film institute and a professional development panel for female filmmakers.
The program runs Sept. 20-25 at the Showplace Icon theaters in St. Louis Park, which boast the best projection and sound systems in the region.
