The best of both worlds

Guillermo del Toro's all-access pass to the underworld has given us "Pan's Labyrinth" and "Hellboy." His animated excursion "Trollhunters" isn't nearly as memorable, but it's still proof the director has the most wonderfully jaded imagination in entertainment. A bored teenager is recruited by giant rodents (led by the perfectly cast Kelsey Grammer) to defend the human and mystical kingdoms. The humor and visual effects dwarf anything being marketed by the Transformers toy department.

The dating game

"The Bachelor" seems like a junior high dance compared with the trials and tribulations facing Ravi Patel in "Meet the Patels," a funny, revealing documentary about how second-generation Indian-Americans struggle to adapt to stateside mating rituals while respecting their parents' time-honored methods of finding a spouse. Director Geeta Patel, Ravi's sister, tosses in some animated bits, but they're ultimately filler. The loving but stubborn family provides enough colorful humor on its own.

Rock 'n' roll never forgets

Bob Seger probably isn't on the shortlist for the American arts world's most exclusive club, but after watching him attack "Heartache Tonight" near the end of the 39th Annual Kennedy Center Honors, maybe he should be. The rocker's salute to the Eagles steals a show that also celebrates the work of James Taylor, Mavis Staples, Al Pacino and Martha Argerich. One question: How did Gayle King and Trevor Noah score primo seats right behind the first family?
