TV picks for Oct. 6-8: The Mavericks, Miley Cyrus, Steven Spielberg, 'Robot Chicken'

Our man in Havana

Raul Malo of the Mavericks re-connects with his Cuban roots as host of "Fifty Years — Ninety Miles: Havana Time Machine," an installment of PBS' "Great Performances" series that celebrates the country's rich musical history. Malo recently told the Star Tribune that he'd love to open a guitar shop in Havana. For now, this TV special will have to do.

Party in the USA

Miley Cyrus wraps up a week of residency on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" that has spotlighted her new album, "Younger Now." She'll compete for the diva throne with guest Taraji P. Henson.

10:35 p.m. Friday, KARE, Ch. 11

Empire of the sun

Susan Lacy takes full advantage of the contacts she made overseeing "American Masters" for decades in her HBO directorial debut, "Spielberg." Daniel Day Lewis, Tony Kushner and Ben Kingsley are among the marquee names that help document Steven Spielberg's growth from a popcorn-oriented filmmaker to a complex button-pusher. The only missing component: input from longtime wife Kate Capshaw and his children.

7 p.m. Saturday, HBO

Chicken run

For those who feel "Saturday Night Live" moves too slow, there's "Robot Chicken," the stop-motion animated series that sends up pop culture at lightning speed. Its latest special is dedicated to spoofing "The Walking Dead," with many cast members gamely lending their voices.
