Join the club

Optimism is alive and well in the final six episodes of "Red Oaks," the late-'80s comedy set at a New Jersey country club. In this third season, David (Craig Roberts) seems no closer to his dream of being a director; Getty (Paul Reiser) is stuck in jail, and Japanese businessmen are looking to buy the club. No worries; this is Red Oaks, where everything comes out OK in the wash — a rare example of sunshine in the increasingly cynical world of laughs.

The conductor

David Suchet doesn't get the chance to reprise his role as Hercule Poirot in the latest big-screen adaptation of "Murder on the Orient Express," but he still knows a few things about the story's creator. "The Mystery of Agatha Christie With David Suchet," which originally aired in 2013, is the perfect primer for Kenneth Branagh's all-star flick, which hits theaters Nov. 10.
