Insane in the membrane

With action star Charlize Theron and "Se7en" director David Fincher listed as executive producers, it's no surprise that "Mindhunter" opens with a particularly gruesome piece of violence. What is surprising about this 1970s-set drama is the calm that follows the storm as FBI agent Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) methodically, and sometimes naively, attempts to get into the head of serial killers, particularly Ed Kemper, played with a spooky childlike innocence by Cameron Britton. If you can handle the slow pace, this series, renewed for a second season, will blow your mind.

New York state of mind

"Jimmy Kimmel Live" will air a week of episodes from Brooklyn, where the host's worship of a previous late-night staple will be on full display. David Letterman will stop by — he also appeared as a guest when Kimmel was in the New York area in 2012 — and Paul Shaffer will sit in with the band each night. Other guests include Big Apple staples Billy Joel and Howard Stern.
