Back on the case

Nobody has a more authoritative whisper than Mary McDonnell, making her the perfect boss on "Major Crimes" (8 p.m., TNT), which returns with eight new episodes. Among the new cases: investigating the deaths of two brothers who may have taken a bad batch of drugs and following a money trail when a body shows up at a country club.

Toxic

Not feeling so hot? It may be the chemical flame retardants that are all around us. "Toxic Hot Seat" (8 p.m., HBO), based on a series of articles in the Chicago Tribune, looks at how powerful people have weaved a web of deception that can make them rich while making us sick.

Tribal court

"Young Lakota" (9 p.m., TPT, Ch. 2), a documentary that's part of the "Independent Lens" series, profiles Sunny Clifford, a young Lakota woman who returns to South Dakota's Pine Ridge Reservation and gets drawn into a political firestorm raging around the issue of abortion.
