With his debut as host of NBC's "The Tonight Show" 50 years ago this October, until he retired from the show on May 22, 1992, he was seen by more people on more occasions than anyone else in American history. Criminal matters

For those who like their crime procedurals served up with a soft touch, try "Major Crimes," the spin-off of "The Closer" that avoids a lot of the blood and guts seen in other shows of the same genre. Star Mary McDonnell and her crew still deal with serious stuff, but the producers aren't trying to win a gross-out contest. For an interview with McDonnell, see this past Sunday's Variety section. 8 p.m. TNT

Herrrrrre's Johnny!

With David Letterman's upcoming retirement and a slew of younger comics getting new talk shows, it's a good time to go back and pay respect to the man who set the stage for everyone else. "Johnny Carson: King of Late Night," an "American Masters" special that first aired in 2012, runs deep with testimonials from major players including Ed McMahon, Doc Severinsen, Bob Newart and — yep — the usually press-shy Letterman. 8 p.m. TPT, Ch. 2

I'll drink to that

Jack Maxwell is my kind of vacation buddy. In "Booze Traveler," the South Boston native uses drinks to get an in-depth (and possibly blurry) look at local customs and traditions. Among his stops in this inaugural season: Armenia, Belize, Lithuania and Nepal. Hey, Jack. Stop by the Twin Cities. We'll keep a bar stool warm for you. 9 p.m. Travel
