Everybody hurts
"Love," which debuted two years ago as an homage to Woody Allen's funnier, scandal-free period, has shifted gears now that its two leads, co-creator Paul Rust and Gillian Jacobs, have settled into something resembling a relationship. Season 3 broadens the landscape, giving supporting characters more room to explore their own desperate stabs at romance. The lovesick include Iris Apatow, who happens to be the 15-year-old daughter of executive producer Judd Apatow.

Kiss of life
The smartest decision ABC made in its reboot of "American Idol" was hiring Katy Perry, whose playful, perky presence gives bounce to a formula that feels tired, even after a two-year hiatus. She may not have the best ear for talent, but she knows how to bring the contestants out of their shells, even if it means giving one warbler his first smooch. Fellow judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan are earnest but lack their teammate's roar.

The new docuseries "Pope: The Most Powerful Man in History" isn't likely to change your religious views. It provides plenty of fodder for the faithful and the skeptics, starting with an episode that looks at how greed and goodwill played equal roles in the expansion of Christianity. Liam Neeson narrates.

Masters of delusion
Even those who believe in magic will have a tough time being dazzled by "Deception," a new series about an illusionist (Jack Cutmore-Scott) who joins the FBI to clear his brother's name. The tricks aren't that spectacular, but at least they keep you distracted from the lame attempts to conjure up chemistry between the magic man and his skeptical female partner.
