Tough as nails

Double-cross Niecy Nash at your own peril. In "Claws," the actress brings sass and sensibility to her role as a salon owner who loses her considerable cool when she's ripped off by the mob. The former "Reno 911!" star is mesmerizing, but the rest of the characters and all too familiar crime plot may make this a hard drama for viewers to dig their nails into.

Jailhouse rock

"Orange Is the New Black," Netflix's most popular series, continues to be fertile ground for actresses of color, especially in the fifth-season premiere, which gives each character in the diverse cast a chance to react to a prison riot with uniquely comical and dramatic turns. Don't expect the inmates to pull off a great escape. The series has been renewed for two more seasons.

Get your motor runnin'

This summer's most unexpected joy ride is "Blood Drive," a violent version of "Cannonball Run" that serves as a proper vehicle for paying homage to classic grindhouse flicks. The cars run on human blood; the series runs on a wicked sense of humor.
