Child's play

The 2016 pilot for "Niko and the Sword of Light" picked up an Emmy, which helped justify a full season of this amusing, high-octane animated series about a 10-year-old warrior who has no idea he's in over his head. Kids won't learn a whole lot from this Indiana Jones Jr., but they'll thoroughly enjoy the adventure.

A change of scenery

Jason Bateman's skills as a director were already on display in 2013's "Bad Words," but he's topped himself with his TV series, "Ozark," simply by casting the great Laura Linney as his on-screen wife. The two play a big-city couple who move to Missouri's summer resort community while trying to pay off a debt to a Mexican drug lord.

Hooray for Hollywood

St. Paul native Nick Swardson has made plenty of visits home this summer, but that hasn't kept him from hitting his mark on the small screen. His series, "Typical Rick," returns as his character, Gary, and Simon Rex's Rick, continue to try to make it in Hollywood. Look for a guest appearance by Charlie Sheen.
