Escape artist

"Insecure," which returns for a second season, has been acknowledged as a touchstone for representing life and love among under-represented members of the black community. Rightly so, but star/creator Issa Rae also reminds me of Rachel Bloom's character in "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" in the way they try to find an escape hatch from reality. It's a shame that neither made the recent Emmy slate of comedy's best actresses.

New girl in town

Nasim Pedrad was never used to her full potential on "Saturday Night Live," a wrong that prime-time TV seems determined to correct. After a very funny arc on "New Girl," Pedrad is front and center in the second season of "People of Earth," playing an eager-to-please FBI agent who stumbles into the world of alien abductees. The series may not be out-of-the-world brilliant, but it has its moments, especially now that Pedrad is on board.

Talking the talk

David Letterman has said Norm Macdonald is one of the funniest people he knows (Al Franken is another), which may explain why the former late-night host is making an appearance on the fairly low-profile project "Norm Macdonald Live." The two are clearly big fans of each other in this engaging, relaxed conversation about everything from being sabotaged on "The $20,000 Pyramid" to working with Mary Tyler Moore on her ill-fated variety show. A must-see for comedy fans.
