Sideline report

If the commentators for "The 2018 Rose Parade Hosted by Cord & Tish" look familiar, that's because you fell in love with them on "Saturday Night Live" when they were portrayed by Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon. Jailhouse rock

"Scared Straight" meets "Undercover Boss" in another season of "60 Days In," the wildly perilous experiment in which civilians pretend to be inmates in Atlanta's Fulton County Jail. The cameras don't fully capture the desperation and loneliness of life behind bars, but it will make you think twice before pocketing that pack of gum at the checkout line.

A writer's life

Before being celebrated as the creator of PBS' "Tales of the City," Armistead Maupin was a closeted gay staffer for conservative Sen. Jesse Helms and a daily newspaper columnist. His believe-it-or-not back story is told in "The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin," a touching documentary every bit as moving as his landmark miniseries. Its stars, Laura Linney, Olympia Dukakis and Ian McKellen, all offer their takes on the writer in this "Independent Lens" installment.
