Weight of the world

The caped heroine from DC Comics may be faster than a speeding bullet, but she's no less impressive than Naomi Kutin, the Orthodox Jewish girl featured in "Supergirl," a new documentary that's part of the "American Lens" series. Director Jessie Auritt looks at the weightlifter's career and how she's managed to succeed despite strict religious obligations and cyberbullying.

The plot thickens

Only 2 percent of the audience checking out the miniseries "Gunpowder" will be experts in early-17th-century English history. The rest will be ogling Kit Harington — aka "Game of Thrones" survivor Jon Snow — who coproduced and stars as Robert Catesby, the driving force behind the Gunpowder Plot, a failed attempt to assassinate King James I. The first episode moves far too slowly for those accustomed to "GOT's" pace, but the brutal execution scenes will trigger some familiar winces.

"The Daily Show's The Yearly Show 2017" is so massive that Trevor Noah and company temporarily moved their studios into New York City's Gramercy Theater for a taping earlier this month. The special will run an hour with all-new material.
