December 24, 1989 The benighted, but ever-optimistic Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) bravely tries to be of good cheer as he attempts to create the perfect Yuletide experience for his entire family when his country cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid) shows up in Warner Bros.' new comedy "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation."

School's in session

It has been nearly 20 years since Rob Reiner directed a really great movie (that would be 1995's "The American President"), so we understand the skepticism about his being featured, alongside his longtime editor Robert Leighton, on "AFI's Master Class: The Art of Collaboration." But if they dig back to their golden era, when their classics included "The Princess Bride" and "A Few Good Men," they could make compelling professors. 7 p.m. TCM

Cape fear

All the Oscar buzz for Michael Keaton's work in "Birdman" has us thinking about 1989's "Batman" and how he overcame all the skepticism by turning in a performance in which he was charming (as Bruce Wayne) and frightening (as the Caped Crusader). Also worth (re)watching to see Jack Nicholson get down to Prince music. 7 p.m. VH1 Classic

Home for the holidays

After the disastrous 1985 "National Lampoon's Vacation" sequel "European Vacation," Chevy Chase and company redeemed themselves with 1989's "Christmas Vacation," an anything-will-go-wrong romp with an inspired performance by the then relatively sane Randy Quaid. 8 p.m. ABC Family
