A new 'Native'

I tackled Richard Wright's "Native Son" decades ago, but this new TV adaptation has me wanting to give the novel another read. Screenwriter Suzan-Lori Parks ("Topdog/Underdog") has set the undoing of Bigger Thomas in modern times and invented a more dramatic ending, but the overall themes of racial prejudice and lost hope in the black community remain the same. The 1986 film version with Oprah Winfrey and Matt Dillon may have had bigger names, but this take carries more of an emotional impact.

Black lives matter

Dwayne Johnson is one of the executive producers of the series "Finding Justice," but Twin Cities leaders and activists are the stars in a new episode which examines the police shootings of Jamar Clark and Philando Castile. The metro area doesn't come across very well, but the filmmakers clearly feel optimistic about Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo, who is among the many locals interviewed.

Rap session

Former Minneapolis "It Girl" Lizzo, fresh off her well received showcase at the South by Southwest Music Festival, takes a breather of sorts when she shares the couch with Tamar Braxton on "Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen." The fast-rising rapper may not want to get too relaxed. Cohen has a way of getting his guests to gossip in ways they never do on other late-night talk shows.
