Tuesday (The predictable reactions to Jerry Kill) edition: Wha' Happened?

Good times.

As we noted in the NOTC today, the popular opinion of new Gophers coach Jerry Kill is not important. But that never stops people from having opinions -- nor should it. We do find it amusing, though, that the opinions of Kill are so predictable. The Day 1 outrage of "Who is this guy! No no no! We were promised the football Tubby! Fire Maturi!" was replaced by the Day 2 Minnesota standard of "OK, let's give this guy a chance. He deserves at least that. Fire Maturi!" Post press conference, we heard a steady diet of, "You know, I actually kind of liked this Kill fellow. Good personality. He'll fit in well. He's not like Tim Brewster. (Fire Maturi)!"

That's just the way we are here. If there's something we don't like, we'll complain about it as long as we're in the majority. Once time passes, we'll find ways to make it seem not as bad. Conversely, if there's something great, we will celebrate it initially and then spend the rest of our time trying to poke holes in it (Kevin Garnett's flaws ... Joe Mauer's lack of power ... you get our drift).

We're wired that way, which is why Kill has a chance. Better to be an underdog here and raise expectations than start with high expectations and see them shattered.

Seattle won a wildly entertaining and very meaningful game Thursday over the Rams. It was part of a lesson on NFL margins.
