White Bear avoids upset, advances to section final CLASS 2A

• SECTION 4: A.J. Welch's third-period goal was the difference in White Bear Lake's 3-2 semifinal win Tuesday over Roseville at the State Fairgrounds. Sixth-seeded Roseville fired 39 shots and came close to upsetting the second-seeded Bears, but White Bear Lake's goalie Chase Gorman tallied 37 saves for the win. ... Hill-Murray advanced to its section final thanks to a lopsided 6-2 win over Stillwater. Willie Brown scored in each period. The Pioneers held Stillwater to 15 shots and killed two power plays early in the game. They had a two-goal lead going into the final period and scored three times late in the game.

CLASS 1A

• SECTION 2: Adam McLain had his hand in every goal in Delano's 5-1 win over Blake, with two goals and three assists. Eric Ylitalo added two goals. Delano goalkeeper Aaron Grangroth stopped 23 of 24 shots.

• SECTION 4: Totino-Grace exploded for four second-period goals against Mahtomedi to win 6-3 and advance to the section final game against St. Thomas Academy. Derek Lodermeier scored twice in that second period, while Mahtomedi managed only three shots on goal. Totino-Grace goalie Michael Larson stopped 16 shots in the win.

CLASS 4A

• SECTION 8: Lindsay Dorr had 12 points to lead all scorers as second-seeded Rogers defeated Bemidji 53-45. For the Lumberjacks, Casey Palmer and Jess Yost combined for 21 points. The Royals move on to face third-seeded Elk River at St. Cloud State on Saturday.

• SECTION 6: Ellie Thompson scored 22 points -- including converting a key three-point play with her squad trailing by one with 7 seconds left -- as Chaska edged Orono 51-49. No other scorer on either team had more than nine points, as Thompson's second-seeded Hawks staved off elimination at the hands of the seventh seed. ... Grace Coughlin led four Red Knights in double figures with 19 as Benilde-St. Margaret's defeated Holy Angels 68-55. Gretchen Sattler chipped in 11, while Bailey Howard and Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod added 10 apiece. Brooke Bowlin led the Stars with 19 points.

CLASS 2A

• SECTION 2: Belle Plaine took a 31-9 lead into halftime and withstood a furious second-half rally to defeat Tri-City United 52-46. The Titans stormed back, outscoring the Tigers 37-21 but coming up just short on the comeback trail. Haley Fogarty led all scorers with 23 points in the win. No Titans scored in double figures, but nine players scored.

• EDINA 93, WAZYATA 73: For the first time in 22 years, Edina is at the top of the Lake Conference. A 20-point win over Wayzata clinched it for the Hornets, which put on an impressive offensive show in front of a home court packed with supporters. Graham Woodward led all scorers with 34 points for Edina.

• MINNETONKA 62, HOPKINS 58: Any time class 4A, No. 5 Minnetonka can enjoy a bus ride home from a Lake Conference rival's school, it's been a good night for the Skippers. Class 4A, No. 2 Hopkins put up a fierce second-half fight but couldn't overcome Minnetonka's great start or Riley Dearring's game-high 17 points. The Royals were led by Amir Coffey, who scored 15. The Skippers jumped to second place in the Lake Conference.

• ARMSTRONG 68, BLAINE 62: Blaine senior Jerome Egbujor brought the Bengals from a 22-point deficit to within four, but Armstrong's Mitch Biewen's 17 points preserved the win for the Falcons. Egbujor finished with 12 points.

• TOTINO-GRACE 59, SPRING LAKE PARK 56: Totino-Grace held off host Spring Lake Park's comeback attempt in the second half to upset its North Suburban opponents. Reggie Meyer scored 15 for the Eagles, and Seth Sullwold scored 12. No Panther tallied double-digit points, but eight players scored at least five.

• ROSEMOUNT 64, JEFFERSON 61: In the hole at halftime, Rosemount hit eight 3-pointers to fuel a second-half comeback in Bloomington. Garrett Goetz and Cole Northwick each had 14 for the Irish.
