BAMAKO, Mali — Officials say an ethnic Tuareg man, who went home to northern Mali to vote, was killed by an angry mob.
A spokesman for the Tuareg group, the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad, confirmed that Abdoulaye Ag Mohamed Ali was killed Sunday in the northern town of Lere where he had gone to vote.
A Malian refugee living in nearby Mauritania, Ousmane Ould Attaher, said by the time local security forces intervened, the man had died from his injuries. The government Tourism Ministry said the victim was the brother of Mali's tourism minister.
The violence highlights the tensions in northern Mali even as the country celebrates a successful presidential election.
Tuaregs and other light-skinned northerners have been attacked by black Malians who accuse them of causing the country's problems.
