Tropical Cyclone Oli Set to Sideswipe Tahiti

February 3, 2010 at 8:25PM

Tropical Cyclone Oli, which ramped up to a Category 1 hurricane Wednesday,is on track to sideswipe Bora Bora and Tahiti with wind and rain squalls duringthe next one to two days.On Wednesday morning, EST, the center of T.C. Oli had already reached within235 miles west of Bora Bora and nearly 400 miles west-northwest of Tahiti.

Movement had been mostly toward the east at nearly 15 mph, but with asoutheastward turn forecast. Oli was thus slated to pass nearest to Bora BoraThursday morning, then nearest to Tahiti within another 24 hours thereafter.

Likely storm impact on both islands will be that of squalls having gale-forcegusts and bursts of torrential rain. Of course, a more northerly track wouldbring severe wind and rain to bear on both Islands.

Oli should sweep away to the southeast over open seas after Friday.
