(As told by Mason's mom, Sarah Mjelde)

My 5-year-old-son, Mason, caught this 27-inch walleye while he is staying up north on Lake Vermilion at his Papa Joe's (Joe Amundson) resort! He loves to be out in the boat. He reeled it in all by himself! I have never seen so many twinkles in his big brown eyes … and not to mention a grin from ear to ear that I will never forget! He told his Papa Joe that he knows what he wants for his birthday — in Mason's words — "A statue of his fish."

No illusion

Tacarie Siner, 6, of Brooklyn Park, caught this bass on a worm while fishing on his grandpa's dock on Lake Minnetonka. He was so excited to catch his first bass. It weighed about 2 ½ pounds — although by swinging it close to the camera just as the photo was snapped, the bass looks almost as big as Tacarie. The fish was released.

First walleye

Jamie Kulla of Lakeville caught her first walleye — a 23-incher — on Leech Lake while fishing with her dad.
