Micale Melotik, 9, of Ramsey used his new spinning rod and reel, and a purple plastic worm to catch this fine largemouth while wading with his dad and sister along the edges of a north metro lake. After a brief photo session he released the fish.

LARGE LAKER Sam Villella and his son, Kincaid, 6, of Blaine, caught this 33-inch lake trout recently on Whitefish Bay of Lake of the Woods, trolling with Rapala.

(As told by Sam Villella)

This was a team effort with my son. We caught the fish in the rain on an older diving blue Rapala with rusting treble hooks. The one hook that was set actually broke as the landing net was brought under the fish — just in time. It was the only lake trout we caught after trolling for several hours. It was an awesome experience. Great eating fish!
