Transit agencies offers free rides for New Year's Eve

Metro Transit, MVTA and the Anoka County Traveler will offer free rides on all buses. light-rail and Northstar trains from 6 p.m. New Year's Eve Thursday through early New Year's Day Friday.

You've seen the messages, "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over." If your New Year's Eve celebration involves alcohol, it may be better to leave the driving to somebody else.

Metro Transit stands ready to give you a lift home. The agency will offer free rides on all buses. light-rail and Northstar trains from 6 p.m. New Year's Eve Thursday through 3 a.m. New Year's Day Friday.

Free rides also will be offered on Minnesota Valley Transit Authority and Anoka County Traveler routes.

Since 1997, Miller Lite has provided more than 1 million rides in the Twin Cities, including the New Year's Eve and St. Patrick's Day programs.

Since its inception in 1987, the Free Rides program has provided more than 5 million people nationwide with a safe ride home.

"Transit provides everything people look for when it comes to transportation – safety, convenience and value," Metro Transit General Manager Brian Lamb said. "And with dozens of bus routes and two light rail lines providing frequent service in Minneapolis, St. Paul and surrounding communities, there are plenty of ways to get around on New Year's Eve."
