Train derails, spills corn in southwest Minnesota

June 11, 2016 at 5:32PM

Twenty-three cars of corn spilled into the Lyon County town of Cottonwood on Friday evening when a BNSF train derailed there.

Officials were continuing to investigate the cause as crews worked to clean up the corn and clear the cars Saturday.

The northbound train was headed to Willmar when the cars tipped about 6:30 p.m. onto railroad right-of-way near County Rd. 32 in the farming community of about 1,200. No injuries were reported.

The road was closed to motor vehicle traffic Saturday so that crews could get equipment in to clean up the site.

"We're sorry for the impact this has on the town and will be working as quickly and safely as possible to restore the area," said Amy McBeth, a BNSF spokeswoman. "We've been talking with local officials to update them on the incident and the response efforts."
