Edina's 8-2 victory over Lakeville North on Saturday night at Xcel Energy Center capped a dominating run through the Class 2A tourney.
The Hornets won three games by a combined score of 17-4, but they were unable to match Benilde-St. Margaret's magical tournament in 2012, when the Red Knights won by a combined 18-4.
Edina's six-goal margin of victory in the championship game was the largest since Cretin-Derham Hall beat Grand Rapids 7-0 in 2006.
Another set of brothers
Tim Poehling — father of Lakeville North's junior twins, Nick and Jack, and freshman Ryan — met former St. Cloud High School player Ron Saatzer on Thursday in St. Paul. Saatzer and his brothers Don and Dick are listed on the team's 1951 and '52 state tournament rosters.
"He even had a picture showing the three brothers in their hockey equipment," Tim Poehling said. "It was really cool. They were wearing the old leather helmets."
Poehling said it was Saatzer's belief that he, twin brother Don and younger brother Dick were the only brother trio to play on the same line in the state tournament history until the Poehlings matched the feat Thursday.
Filling the box
There were four Lakeville North players jammed into the penalty box at one point late in the game after three Panthers were whistled for penalties at the same time. Nick Poehling (charging), Jack Sadek (slashing), Matt Arnold (hooking) all joined Jack McNeely, already serving an interference penalty, in the box.
No Hornets players were called for penalties in the sequence that came with 3:47 remaining. Edina's Cullen Munson scored on one of the ensuing power plays.
