Blasts from the past

Arsenio Hall joins country singer Kelsea Ballerini as they count down the "Greatest Hits" of yesteryear, starting with the 1980-85 period. Contemporary stars are expected to team up with musicians better known from decades past, which means that at some point, you'll see the Backstreet Boys team up with Meghan Trainor on "I Want It That Way."

Grief counseling

Paul Rudd temporarily hangs up his Ant-Man costume to play a grieving caregiver in "The Fundamentals of Caring," a tear-jerker directed by Rob Burnett, the former head producer for "The Late Show With David Letterman." Selena Gomez appears as a hitchhiker.

False notes

I was a big fan of Denis Leary's narcissistic characters in "The Job" and "Rescue Me," but his fallen star in "Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll," which he co-created, seems like one ego trip too many. In Thursday's second-season premiere, Leary's Johnny Rock is determined to make a comeback — as long as the game plan consists of logging more time in the bedroom than the rehearsal hall. His icky relationship with his daughter will cause more cringing than amateur night at a dive club.
