It's still early in the year, but go ahead and make Kerry Washington and Wendell Pierce odds-on favorites to lead the Emmy race for their controlled, nuanced performances as Anita Hill and Clarence Thomas in "Confirmation." The film doesn't make it easier to pick sides, but it makes a successful case for the Senate hearings' impact on sexual harassment in the workplace.

A kiss is but a kiss
While other networks switch their mission statements as often as you're supposed to change the oil in your car, Hallmark Channel has stuck to its guns — even if the ammunition of choice is Nerf pellets. Take "The Good Witch," the channel's No. 1 original series, which returns for a second season in which a kiss on the lips is considered sultry. The courtships in this charming little town might be tame, but it's a nice alternative in the cable world that increasingly resembles Cinemax After Dark.
