Top-10 finishes for swim teams from Spring Lake Park, Maple Grove, Anoka

Three north metro boys' swimming teams competed in the True Team state meet last week at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Spring Lake Park placed ninth in the Class 1A meet while in Class 2A Maple Grove took seventh and Anoka finished ninth.

Spring Lake Park's top finish came from freshman Mitch Raihle. He was runner-up in 1-meter diving. Richard Kepner placed fifth in both the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events. Samuel Roden took eighth in the 100 breaststroke.

The 200 medley relay team of Leon Ding, Davin Sang, Mark Malinovskiy, Richard Kepner took sixth. The 200 freestyle relay team of Sang, Jathen Easter, Trevor Mitchell and Ryan Kepner placed eighth. The 400 freestyle relay team of Mitchell, Ryan Kepner, Malinovskiy and Richard Kepner placed seventh.

In the Class 2A meet, Maple Grove started strong with a fifth-place finish from the 200 medley relay team of Andrew Wong, Brenner Hohenstein, Tristan Plante and Matthew Ang. In the individual events, Hohenstein took third in the 100 breaststroke, Plante swam to fifth in the 100 backstroke and Walker Mattews took ninth in the 200 individual medley.

Anoka was led by Cole Birklid, who took third in the 200 freestyle, and Matt Hedman, who placed third in the 200 individual medley. The duo battled to a close finish in the 500 freestyle. Hedman placed third, one spot ahead of Birklid.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Alex Kvidera, Hedman, Josh Gerick and Birklid placed 10th. The 400 freestyle relay team of Kvidera, Gerick, Hedman and Birklid finished sixth.

Streaking teamsRobbinsdale Cooper's girls' basketball team entered this week on a season-best six-game winning streak, including a 55-47 victory against Benilde-St. Margaret's (No. 9, Class 3A) ... Park Center's girls' basketball team, 11-6, is also on a six-game winning streak ... Anoka's girls' basketball team entered this week on a three-game spurt, including a 53-51 victory over Centennial (No. 7, Class 4A). Their victories were by a combined 11 points. ... In boys' hockey, a possible Section 5 playoff meeting is shaping up as No. 9 Blaine plays host to No. 8 Centennial at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Blaine started the week on a seven-game winning streak. The Cougars are 8-0-2 in their past 10 games.

Mounds View McDaniels hits milestoneMounds View senior guard Katie McDaniels scored her 1,000th career point Jan. 25 in an overtime loss to Woodbury. She finished with 15 points in the game.
