Officials have identified the toddler who climbed into an enclosure outside a Minnesota home and was mauled to death by a bulldog that also severely injured the boy’s grandmother as she tried to rescue him, officials said.

On Jan. 13, the Sheriff’s Office identified the boy as 3-year-old Beckett John Brown, who lived about 6 miles southwest of Perham, Minn., and the grandmother as Kristen Brown.

Brown was last reported to be surviving her injuries. Her identity has yet to be released.

The incident occurred early in the afternoon on Jan. 11 at the home west of New York Mills, the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office said.

The dog involved, an American bulldog, was euthanized, the Sheriff’s Office said.

According to the Sheriff’s Office:

Brown called 911 and said she was driving her grandson to the emergency room at Perham Health Clinic for treatment of dog bite injuries.

Deputies met Brown at the hospital and learned that Beckett had climbed into the outside enclosed area and was attacked.

The grandmother “sustained significant injuries while stopping the attack,” a Sheriff’s Office statement read. She was transferred to a hospital in Fargo for further treatment.
