Toddler drowns in pool in Maple Grove

July 3, 2017 at 10:53AM

A small child fell into a pool behind a Maple Grove home and died Sunday morning despite a family member's life-saving efforts, authorities said.

The incident involved a boy under 2 years old in the 7300 block of Orchid Lane, and personnel from the Hennepin County Sheriff's water patrol were called to the scene about 9 a.m., according to sheriff's spokesman Jon Collins.

"CPR was started by a family member, and officers took over life-saving attempts," Police Sgt. Tanya Petz said Sunday afternoon.

The child was then taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead, the Sheriff's Office said.

Authorities have not released the boy's identity, nor have they addressed the circumstances that led to the child ending up in the pool.

Police were the first to be called to the scene, according to emergency dispatch scanner communication.

"We don't know how long the baby was under," said one officer.

Fire Department personnel also responded.
