Today at the Capitol

Marijuana, voter ID, redistricting bills

April 7, 2011 at 1:28PM

If Wednesday was, in the words of one state senator, "liquor day," maybe Thursday could be called "reefer day" -- at least briefly.

A day after a Senate committee dealt with a passel of alcohol-related bills, including the sale of it at the University of Minnesota's TCF Bank Stadium, another Senate committee planned to deal with bills that would make synthetic marijuana illegal.

Also on the Legislature's agenda: A House committee will wade through the thorny issue of charter schools, possibly changing the ground rules; committees in both chambers will take up the controversial issue of requiring voters to present photo IDs at their polling places, and a House committee begins the task of wading into the thorny task of redistricting Minnesota's congressional and state legislative districts.

Gov. Mark Dayton has a light schedule, with his only appearance being at the the NCAA Men's Frozen Four hockey game between University Minnesota Duluth and Notre Dame. He is scheuled to drop the puck at 4 p.m., and -- it is hoped -- won't repeat former Gov.Tim Pawlenty's lamentable tongue-slip in 2005, when he mispronouced "puck."

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
