Timing the Soaking Rain`s Arrival in the Northeast

March 27, 2010 at 7:25PM

The return of soaking rain in the Northeast is just around the corner, courtesyof the storm that recently dumped snow across Colorado. The steadiest rain will reach the Northeast on Sunday, mainly in the afternoon.

It will not be until late Sunday afternoon that the rain spreads over Albany,New York City and Philadelphia. Sunday night is when the rain will encompassthe mid-Atlantic coast and New England.

The rain should not cause widespread flooding. But with over an inch of rainexpected east of the Appalachians, localized problems may arise in urban andlow-lying areas. The rain also threatens to further aggravate rivers andstreams that remain or recently were out of their banks.

Some flooding may also take place at the immediate coastline as gusty southeastwinds drive the ocean water onshore, mainly at the time of high tide.

Enough cold air will be in place that snow falls either at the rain's onset oras it comes to an end across the St. Lawrence Valley. There could be up to afew inches of snow in northern Maine and neighboring parts of Canada. Themountains of far northern New England is where substantial snowfall isexpected.

On Tuesday, sunshine is not in the forecast for the Northeast. A new stormriding up the East Coast will likely spread more rain from the easternmid-Atlantic into New England. It is not out of the question that the rainpushes farther west into the mid-Atlantic's interior.
