Tim Wood's sore shoulder will keep him off Twins roster

But Wood arrived at the ballpark on Sunday complaining of a sore shoulder, so his quest to make the team is on hold.

"He doesn't feel right,'' Twins General Manager Terry Ryan said, "so we're going to have to take care of that.''

Ryan said he was unsure how long Wood will be sidelined but he will not need an MRI exam.

"It's ironic, because he threw the ball on Saturday better than he has all spring,'' Ryan said.

After giving up five runs on March 5 to Tampa Bay, the two-time International League reliever of the year gave up just one run over this next 6 1/3 innings. He also worked to speed up an alarmingly slow delivery. He's out of options, so pitching better down the stretch could have made the Twins more comfortable with bringing him north.

With Wood sidelined, the Twins' bullpen picture is clearer, maybe even set.

Glen Perkins will close, with Jared Burton the key setup man. Brian Duensing will be the only lefthander in the pen, as Tyler Robertson has pitched poorly.

Ryan reiterated that righthander Samuel Deduno will not be allowed to pitch until his sore left groin is 100 percent.

Deduno suffered the injury Tuesday while pitching for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. The injury has likely cost him a chance to earn a spot in the rotation.

"We're going to take our time with that thing,'' Ryan said. "We don't want to do any more damage to it. It is something that will correct itself in a short amount of time, but he's not ready to throw off a mound yet.''

• Brian Dozier went 3-for-4 Sunday to raise his average to .278 in camp. He added two RBI.

• A handful of minor league pitchers are expected to be brought over to appear in Monday's game. The combination of injuries and it being late in camp led the Twins to look for help on the o ther side of campus.

The Twins play host to St. Louis on Monday. Mike Pelfrey will pitch against Shelby Miller. First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m.
