Tidbits: Another Oreo

Plus, granola bars get thin.

August 25, 2010 at 8:12PM

Another Oreo All right. Mr. Tidbit has broken the rule way too often, so he's going to stop saying he has a rule against discussing new food items when the only thing new is a new flavor of an existing item. In so many cases there's a little more going on (but not much).

Here, for example, are new Heads or Tails Oreos -- in which one of the two cookies that make up the Oreo sandwich cookie is an original Oreo chocolate cookie and the other is a "Golden" Oreo cookie. So it's not exactly just a new flavor. The package is slightly smaller than that of regular Oreos, so it costs more per ounce.

Knowing the way Oreo versions have proliferated, Mr. Tidbit is confident that it won't be long before there is a Double Stuf version of Heads or Tails Oreos.

Wait! These are Double Stuf Heads or Tails Oreos! Did Mr. Tidbit sleep through the introduction of regular (single stuf) Heads or Tails Oreos? He can find no reference to them in his vast archive.

Maybe he refused to mention them when they appeared because he felt that Heads or Tails Oreos were just a new flavor.

Thin granola New Nature Valley Granola Thins, described on the box as "crispy squares," are graham-cracker-size squares of granola, topped on one side with either chocolate or peanut butter flavored coating. There are 10 squares in the box, which sells for the same price as the many other Nature Valley granola bars.

But the total of the six-bar packages of those other bars ranges from 7.2 to 8.9 ounces. For the same price the 10 Granola Thins total just 6 ounces (they are thin). So you get only half a bar (or less) at a time -- but with a sweet coating.

Granola Thins cost at least 20 percent more (and almost 50 percent more compared with the 8.9-ounce packages) per ounce than regular Nature Valley granola bars.
