The Minnesota Thunder couldn't get it done Friday night at the National Sports Center, losing to the visiting Carolina Railhawks 2-1.

The loss pulls Carolina in a tie with the Thunder; a victory would have put the Thunder six points clear of Carolina and launched the team into seventh place in the United Soccer League First Division standings.

The Thunder spends its next four games on the road before the final two regular-season games Sept. 13 and 20.

Etc. • Sioux City beat the visiting St. Paul Saints 9-0 to clinch the American Association North Division second-half title. Steve Butler had three hits for the Saints.

Sara Clancy scored two goals and Lindsey Dare recorded her sixth career shutout as the Gophers women's soccer team opened its season with a 5-0 victory over Northern Iowa at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
