Three Rivers Park District paves the way for two structures to be recognized as historic places

March 22, 2014 at 6:54PM

Three Rivers Park District commissioners gave the go-ahead for the park system to nominate two farm structures for the National Register of Historic Places. They include the Noerenberg Estate barn, built in 1912 and located in Noerenberg Memorial Park, and the Schmid farmstead ruins from 1876 in Lake Minnetonka Regional Park.

Placement on the register can open doors to apply for historic preservation grants from federal, private and state sources, such as Legacy funds administered by the Minnesota Historical Society.

Park officials said the goal is to preserve and interpret the structures, and that getting on the national register will not add significant restrictions to how the district manages the sites.

The nomination process can take a year to complete, with many stages of review.
