Crypticon Minneapolis

One of the biggest sci-fi conventions of the year, Crypticon will be packed with more sci-fi celebrities and bands than ever, plus an expanded FX prop room. Special guests include Jeffrey Combs (Herbert West in "Re-Animator" and a "Star Trek" regular since the '90s) and Dee Wallace (Elliot's mom in "E.T."), along with Kathleen Kinmont ("Bride of Re-Animator," "Halloween 4") and Walter Phelan ("House of 1,000 Corpses"). Events include an FX demo with a professional special-effects makeup artist (11:30 a.m. Sat.), a "Transylvania TV" panel with the cult-classic show's creators (1 p.m. Sat.) and a "celebrity dinner" featuring a few of the special guests (6:30 p.m. Sat., $75 with Crypticon entry). A campariffic horror-film fest runs all weekend, with titles like "Salvation by Blood" and "Strip Club Slasher," and there will be two nights of metal bands.

SCENEaSOTA

In its third annual edition, the SCENEaSOTA fashion show is set to continue its forward momentum. With its mix of up-and-comers (Britta Feuerhelm, Jenn Bratvold), returning designers (Jenny Carle, Kathryn V., Carmichael Claith) and more established names (Kevin Kramp, Raul Osorio, Frances Zerr) -- coupled with some noted accessory designers (Carrier Pigeon, Ferociter, Ruby3) and Vision models -- it's clear the show owes a debt to Voltage. Here, rock 'n' roll is traded out for some film segments by Elijah Chhum and additional visuals by Ken Hannigan.

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
