The Minneapolis Public Schools could reopen a third closed school as administrators consider more solutions for a projected enrollment increase.
Administrators unveiled a proposal this week that could reopen one of two building, Tuttle in southeast or Webster in northeast, as a pre-kindergarten through third grade school. Reopening a school in that part of the city would allow the district to keep Sheridan Arts Magnet as a K-8 building.
The district would have to relocate two contract alternative schools, Tatanka Academy and Heritage Science & Technology, to reopen Tuttle, 1042 18th Av. SE. The administrative offices at Webster, 425 5th St. NE could relocate to the new district headquarters scheduled to open in fall 2012.
The enrollment plan also recommends reopening the district's Howe and Folwell buildings.
Parents heard about the the alternative proposal for Sheridan during the first week of community meetings on the district's "Planning for Changing Enrollment" recommendation. The district hosted meetings at Sheridan, Washburn High School to review plans for a new middle school at the Ramsey school site and Jefferson Community School.
Staff at Jefferson suggested an alternative plan that would keep the school as a K-8. Under the district's plan, Jefferson would become a K-5 school with a pathway to Anthony Middle School in southwest Minneapolis.
The district is requesting feedback on the enrollment proposal in a six-question survey on its website.
