Twins' 2005 draft hits and misses

A look at the players the Twins selected in the first 10 rounds of the 2005 MLB draft, plus those taken in later rounds that made it to the major leagues. Note: Players with asterisk (*) made it to the majors.

Received a $1.35 million signing bonus. Made 26 appearances with the Twins before he was traded to the Rays following 2007 season. Now a Brewer, Garza is in his 10th season in the majors.

1 (39) Hank Sanchez, 1B, Mission Bay (San Diego) HS

Got a $900,000 signing bonus. Spent five seasons in the minors and never reached Class AA..

2 (54) Paul Kelly, SS, Flower Mound (Texas) HS

Got a $650,000 bonus. Battled injuries, playing only 164 games in six seasons in the minors.

2 (73) Kevin Slowey, RHP, Winthrop*

Signed for $490,000. Spent five of his seven major league seasons with the Twins. He officially retired last week.

2 (80) Drew Thompson, SS, Jupiter (Fla.) HS

Got a $475,000 bonus. Played his final minor league game in 2011 after dealing with a back injury.

3 (84) Brian Duensing, LHP, Nebraska*

Got a $400,000 bonus. Has spent all seven seasons in the majors with the Twins. He has a career 4.22 ERA in 612 innings pitched.

3 (105) Ryan Mullins, LHP, Vanderbilt

Got a $350,000 bonus. Last played for the Twins organization in 2011 with Class AAA Rochester 2011.

4 (135) Caleb Moore, C, East Tennessee State

Got a $40,000 bonus. He was released from high Class A Fort Myers in 2008 after Tommy John surgery.

5 (165) Steven Tolleson, SS, South Carolina*

Got a $157,000 bonus. Tolleson is a member of the Blue Jays in his fourth season in the majors. He spent five of his 11 seasons in the minors with the Twins before he was released in 2010.

6 (195) J.W. Wilson, OF, Midland (Texas) HS

Got a $140,000 bonus. Spent only two seasons in the minors, both in rookie leagues. He last played for Elizabethton in 2006.

7 (225) Gregory Yersich, C, Andrean HS (Merrillville, Ind.)

Got a $90,000 bonus. Topped off in Class A at Beloit. Yersich played his last game in 2008.

8 (255) Danny Powers, RHP, Central Missouri

Got a $12,500 bonus. Reached Class AA New Britain in 2007, but it was his final season with the Twins after four years in the minors.

9 (285) Erik Lis, 1B, Evansville

Signed for $60,000. Stopped playing last season after three years in independent leagues.

10 (315) Matt Betsill, 3B, Furman

Betsill played only one season at high Class A Fort Myers in 2007. Played only three seasons in the minors.

12 (375) Alex Burnett, RHP, Ocean View HS (Hunt. Beach, Calif.)*

Burnett made his major league debut with the Twins in 2010 and spent the next three years with the team. He then spent a season with the Orioles. He was last with the Cubs in 2013.

16 (495) Yonder Alonso, C, Coral Gables (Fla.) HS*

Alonso didn't sign and opted to attend Miami. He was picked in the first round by the Reds in 2008, and was traded to the Padres in 2011. He's in his sixth season in the majors.

23 (705) David Herndon, RHP, Gulf Coast (Fla.) Comm. College*

Herndon didn't sign with the Twins. He was picked in the fifth round by the Angels in 2006. Herndon spent three seasons in the majors with the Phillies.

36 (1095) Rene Tosoni, OF, Chipola College (Marianna, Fla.)*

The Twins drafted Tosoni in the 34th round in 2004, but he didn't sign. He did, however, in 2005. Tosoni played one season with the Twins in 2011. He's playing for the Sioux City Explorers for the independent American Association.
