Has spring sprung? Nobody really knows, but certainly there are a good deal of squirrels out and about in the parks, mating wildly. In art news, there are plenty of shows opening and people getting out to them. Here are my five picks for the weekend. As usual, it's a nice mix of events, including visual art openings, a film screening, and even a group Wikipedia editing event. Enjoy!

How many times have you searched for one of your favorite artists and felt astounded that they either didn't have a Wikipedia page, or they had one that was rather sparsely worded? Chances are that these artists, who may fall into the "under-represented" category – as in, queer, feminist, POC, outsider, or just plain #notyourtypicalarthistorywhitedude – then Houston, we have a problem! Luckily, there is someone who can fix it: You! At the Art/Feminist Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon, learn how to update and edit the Wikipedia pages of the artists you hold near and dear to your heart and brain.

Jim Denomie at Bockley Gallery

Where: 2123 W 21st St, Minneapolis

Opening reception: Friday, May 5 from 6-8pm. Runs through June 10.

Info: http://www.bockleygallery.com/

The Wizard of Oz gets a bizarre-o update in the world of artist Jim Denomie, whose show "Oz, the Emergence" is focused around a single large-scale painting. In it, a pink-ish colored individual with a mane of unkempt brown hair marches down a checkered road, holding hands with a disoriented tin man who grasps a gun, and a scaredy cat scarecrow. In the backroom, viewers can peep works-on-paper from Denomie's recent residency at the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans.

Jen Proctor: Confound Footage screening

Where: Cellular Cinema at the Bryant-Lane Bowl (810 W Lake St, Minneapolis, 612-825-3737)

When: Sunday, May 7 at 7 p.m.

Tickets: $6-$12 sliding scale. Buy tickets here:http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2920604

Cellular Cinema, Minneapolis' premiere screening series of contemporary experimental film and video, shows this new finding from Ypsilanti, Michigan-based film/media artist, Jennifer Proctor. The film splices together found footage from Bruce Conner's 1958 "A Movie," old-school-esque VHS workout tapes, and faster-paced YouTube and Vine hits. She also squeezes in some Hollywood blockbusters, because how else to tie together the overarching, incredibly influential entertainment industry?

"The Siege of Leningrad"

Where: Russian Art Museum (5500 Stevens Ave S., Minneapolis)

Exhibition info: http://tmora.org/2016/12/26/the-siege-of-leningrad/

With all the political back-and-forth between Trump and Putin, isn't it time you brushed up on your Russian art? "The Siege of Leningrad" focuses on exactly that: The 900-day siege of the city from 1941-44. Through photographs, films, maps and stories, visitors can experience the city's struggle during that war period. Some lived, some did. Either way, it was horrible and now it's all documented archival history that seems further away than it really is. Note that the Museum of Russian Art will close at 3pm on Friday, May 5th to prepare for their annual fundraiser, The Art of Vodka.
