The tsunami's devastation

On Dec. 26, 2004, a massive undersea earthquake off Indonesia triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in 14 Asian and African countries. It left more than 1.7 million people homeless and caused an estimated $10 billion in damage.

SRI LANKA: Deaths: 34,400; houses destroyed, 119,562; houses rebuilt, 112,543

INDIA: Deaths: 14,627; houses destroyed or damaged, 85,000; houses rebuilt, 70,000

THAILAND: Deaths: 8,324; houses destroyed or damaged, 6,824; houses rebuilt, more than 3,000
