LOS ANGELES - Smoking is a terrible habit, but occasionally it pays off. The first thing I did when I got to the FOX party for TV critics on Sunday night at Castle Green was scope out the most discreet smoking area on the grounds and light up. I figured if Charlie Sheen made an appearance to promote his upcoming FX show, "Anger Management," he'd head straight to a place where he could chainsmoke. Sure enough, the table I found outside near the kitchen was the first place Sheen went to with his security team and just about every FX publicist at the party.

I got almost a half hour with the controversial star who was more than open to talking about his past year (even as his manager tried to direct the conversation elsewhere). He even took time out to catch up with his former "Young Guns" co-star Kiefer Sutherland (another big-time chain smoker). I'll have details about the chat later this week. Trust me. It's a good one.

The belles of the ball were the cast members of "Glee," which Fox appeared to renew earlier in the day, despite falling ratings. Last year, when the show was red hot, most of young members spent a nanosecond at the bash. This time around: They remained for hours. Funny how accessible talent becomes when a show is in trouble.

Also at the party: Christian Slater, Jaime Pressly, Zooey Deschanel, Cloris Leachman, Walton Goggins and a number of Ultimate Fighting Championship warriors.
