Local artists Daniel Buettner and Mary Bergs will open a new exhibit entitled "The Sublime Mundane" on Thursday in the Inez Greenberg Art Gallery at the Bloomington Theatre and Art Center.
There will be a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. at the gallery on opening night, and at 7 p.m. June 27 Bergs and Buettner will speak about their work.
In "The Sublime Mundane," the artists take ordinary objects out of their everyday context to allow viewers to see them in a whole new way. Bergs focuses mostly on art installations, while Buettner paints, incorporating collage and another technique called trompe l'oeil — which means "deceive the eye" in French — to make his paintings look like collage.
Both artists are based in Minneapolis.
Buettner, who has been a member of the Minneapolis artist collective Rosalux Gallery for more than 10 years, teaches fine arts at St. Francis Middle School in St. Francis.
Bergs worked for more than 25 years as a clinical social worker, manager, and art and design consultant in the health care industry.
"The Sublime Mundane" runs until July 12. The gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, and 1 to 10 p.m. on Sundays.
