The Steeles let their secret out over the weekend at the family's 25th holiday concert.

J.D. Steele announced from the stage of the Fitzgerald Theater that while they are hanging up the family holiday concert, they hope to bring "The Gospel at Colonus," the Bob Telson-Lee Breuer musical that originated in the Twin Cities before going to Broadway and to international venues, to the Twin Cities next year.

"Gospel at Colonus" ran for 61 performances on Broadway with Morgan Freeman as a messenger and James Earl Jones' father Robert as king Creon. No venue or time was announced but J.D. Steele, who conducted the Broadway choir, said over the weekend that he hoped to land the show in St. Paul.

"We've done this show all over the world -- in Paris and Athens -- and it's time to bring it home," he said.

The Steeles production that played its last at the Fitzgerald was a family extravaganza whose highlights included a capella singing around a grand piano. All six siblings participated, bantering about good-natured competition before locking in tight harmonies on songs seemingly plucked from the air. (That they were improvising was clear from the fact that they stopped and re-started a couple of tunes and that they changed tempos in the middle of one.)

The evening showcased a new generation of Steeles. The young performers who rapped, did spoken word poetry, danced, sang and performed magic. Afterwards, a number of people in the audience said that they hoped to see the family perform again. What do you think? Should the Steeles bring "Gospel at Colonus" to the Twin Cities?
