INDIANAPOLIS -- Brad Childress might have provided the most memorable moment of the interviews at the NFL Scouting Combine but it had nothing to do with anything he said.
Instead, the Vikings coach serenaded those assembled around a podium inside the media center at Lucas Oil Field. This came after Childress was asked a question about E.J. Henderson's recovery from the broken leg he suffered in December. Childress went into a story about how he saw Henderson at the Vikings facility on Thursday and that the linebacker was using a cane to get around.
Upon witnessing this, Childress said he broke into song and then Childress actually started to sing. "He wore a cane and derby hat, they called him Bat, Bat Masterson." Media members looked on either surprised or at least amused. "[Henderson] looked at me and said, 'What was that?'" Childress said. "I said, 'Bat Masterson.' I said to the trainer, 'Google that right now.' So he Googled it and the first thing that came up the guy sang."
At this point Childress started to sing again. "He wore a cane and derby hat, they called him Bat.'"
Henderson soon found out Childress was talking about the classic TV Western series that featured the late Gene Berry and ran from 1958 to 1961. Here's the theme song in case you're curious and here's Childress' version.
"His new nickname is not E.J., it's Bat," Childress said.
