The granddaddy of all arctic outbreaks for North America comes over the top ofthe world from Siberia. Whenever a cross-polar flow develops, the United Statesusually has to endure the coldest weather of the winter. The situation is unique in that the jet stream follows a path from Russiaacross the top to the world, then southward into the United States.
The current cold weather is somewhat of a hybrid between air that came fromSiberia and arctic air that was home-brewed over northern Canada. Though verycold, it is not as bad as it could be.
