The old saying is that a picture is worth a thousand words. But pictures are more than that. They bring you to a place, even if you are a thousand miles away. They spur you to empathize with people, even if they are strangers. They connect you to an experience you’ve never had. Delivering those images is the job of the photographer.

When word spread the morning of August 27th about the shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in south Minneapolis, Minnesota Star Tribune photographers were sent to the scene. The images they took show the danger, the panic and the pain of that day. They continued to tell the story in the days that followed from the neighborhood around the church to the memorials to the hospitals. For so many people who weren’t there that day, it’s the images that they took that made it real.

Richard Tsong-Taatarii and Elizabeth Flores are two of the Star Tribune photographers who were there during that time. In this brief interview, they talk about what it’s like to capture these images with sensitivity and respect for the families who were photographed.
