The New Old War in Afghanistan, a four-part series in The Star Tribune

January 29, 2010 at 9:29PM

The Star Tribune begins a series on Sunday about Afghanistan through the eyes of several Minnesota Army National Guard units deployed there. Here's Friday's NewsBreak, where I talk about the series.

One of them is the 114th Transportation Co., based out of Duluth. We followed them on a convoy in volatile Helmand Province to deliver supplies to several British bases. It was the first time the Brits and the Americans coordinated their efforts and the 100-truck convoy presented an easy target for insurgents. The series also will follow a small group of Minnesota soldiers in northern Afghanistan whose mission is to mentor the rag-tag Afghan Army.

Watch a video of the convoy by Star Tribune photographer Richard Sennott.

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat. It’s too soon to tell how much the immigration crackdown is to blame.
